Cornwall Council have launched their Call for Sites this week! The Call for Sites will inform the preparation of the Council’s new Local Plan, which will cover the period up to 2050.

The Council are looking for land to be considered for:

- Housing (which could include market-led housing, affordable housing, older-persons housing, supported living, student accommodation, self-build plots, or other types of specialist housing) and Gypsy and Traveller pitches

- Employment

- Commercial uses (including offices, retail, leisure, hotel and mixed commercial uses)

- Community uses

- Tourism

- Public Green Space

- Energy Generation

- Nutrient Neutrality mitigation land

- Biodiversity Net Gain

We’re always looking for opportunities to improve at Urban Design Box. We’re pleased to continue to support our colleague @Emily Ramsay during her studies for a postgraduate Diploma in Urban Design at @Oxford Brookes University.

“My studies at Oxford Brookes so far have given me a grounding in urban design theory and practice. Studying part-time while also working at Urban Design Box has allowed me to apply new knowledge during my working days, and bring different perspectives to urban design that can help navigate emerging challenges such as climate change and social inequality.

I’ve just started my final semester and am looking forward to working on sites in Rotterdam and London for my studio work, no doubt involving some caffeine-fuelled late nights!”

We enjoyed hearing the inspiring story of Bristol Beacon last week at the Beacons of Light talk hosted by Design West.

It was great to hear about the history of the venue, from suffragette protests to being rebuilt after devastating fires (twice!) and about the renovation journey over the last 5 years.

The renovations celebrate the building’s original structure, having rebuilt the patchwork of walls from previous restorations and stripped away layers of paint to reveal beautiful stonework. New internal walls include pilasters and arches that echo the shapes seen on the façade on Colston Street.

Hearing about the challenges of managing large cultural building projects such as the Bristol Beacon and Aviva Studios in Manchester was a testament to the resilience and aspiration of both cities and the individuals involved.

The venue now has 4 different event spaces fit for the future and for the cultural aspirations of Bristol, which will play a pivotal role in the arts scene of our city and the south-west.
